Shibori is the Japanese traditional art of fabric manipulating and dying with indigo to create stunning patterns on white cloth. The earliest known example of cloth dyed with a shibori technique dates from the 8th century.
An AAA founder and local artist, Peggy Reichard will guide you through the processes of (1) pole wrapping (arashi), (2) wrapping over found objects such as small stones (kumo) and (3) board clamping (itajime).
Participants should bring their own lunch and three to five items to be dyed. Fabric must be white and of 100% natural fiber – cotton, silk or linen. Rayon is semi-synthetic and will also work.
Ready-made clothing, napkins, pillowcases, and sheets to be cut are good examples. Thrift stores are a good resource.
